States with limits on charter schools may lose out on federal grants

News release: U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan says that states that do not have public charter laws or put artificial caps on the growth of charter schools will jeopardize their chances of receiving grants from the $4.35 billion Race to the Top Fund, a program created as part of the federal economic stimulus package. President Obama has called upon states to encourage the expansion of charter schools. But 10 states do not have laws allowing public charter schools, and in the 40 states that do allow charters, 26 have caps on the number of public charter schools.
